What Are We Trusting In?

Jeremiah was a prophet called by God, maybe 20 years old. He was priestly. He lived in an exciting time, when King Josiah was bringing back a "revival" of sorts. But Jeremiah had to preach for four different kings. He was is known as the "weeping prophet." In later life, Jeremiah gets dragged by his fellow Israelites back to Egypt. In the extrabiblical accounts, the Israelites stoned him to death. Jeremiah describes the heart of the people in chapter 5, "So I will go to the leaders and speak to them;

surely they know the way of the Lord, the requirements of their God.” But with one accord they too had broken off the yoke and torn off the bonds." In verse 17, it describes all the bad things that would happen to the Israelites for trusting in their "stuff." In the same way today, we are greatly blessed today with "stuff." But our trust cannot be in this stuff. It must always be in Jesus.
